Captains

Talon stood in the newly fitted Captain's cabin of The Fist and marveled at the splendor. His old master, John, sat at a finely polished oak table, drank from a china teacup and stirred it with a silver spoon. Once they had won the battle, ship discipline was once again re-established and the pirates were treated as slaves again. It was a tense standoff, the numbers were pretty much equal now.

The Ostian navy men pushed past them, ignored them and told them where they could and couldn't go on the ship. it was as if they had forgotten they had been rescued by them only hours before. The Ostians had captured a handful of the warriors who were just badly injured. A few cuts and bruises, one or two who had cowered back and they had taken the witch women, Anya as well. Talon had returned to her cell after the battle to see it swinging open. Since he'd met Jasonne, he was interested in people like her. Did she have some power or just tricks and games? He looked at her now, as she was chained neatly to a chair in the Captain's quarters, John clearly had some interest in her as well. Most of the Tuskani were dead but she, being their prisoner, clearly knew their ways. Talon had been invited to the Captain's quarters evidently to watch 'Captain Winthrope' eat before he and his men would be shipped off. He was escorted by two armed men who stood inside the door, watching him like they expected him to steal their silver. Before he'd been taken away, he'd muttered a few words to Jinn, who just nodded back. The whole situation filled him with unease, the last person he wanted to meet again was John. And the last thing he wanted to know was that he was now an Ostian Naval Captain.

He stood across the fine polished table from John as he drank something called coffee. It was a black, hot drink that smelled fine. He'd not had it for years and years, it reminded him of their shared childhood.

John spoke first. 'If I didn't trust you Hassi, I'd say you let my men get killed on purpose. I lost twenty in that scuffle and you, Captain, what were your losses?' he asked.

'I lost two men, two good men Vig and Hill, fine gents, but we'll see them to the sea tonight,' he said.

'Well now see, 10% of my losses, what do you say to that?' he asked.

What Talon thought was that his men were better fighters and better at not getting killed. More than ten had gotten some nasty cuts and Rex had two fingers cut off, but they'd lived. His men fought together, helped each other and weren't half as flashy about it as the Ostians or him. They would rather fight someone three on one, honor didn't matter when it came to a rebellion.

'I think our Dark Skin scared them,' he said.

John laughed. 'Maybe so. Anyway, we're in a shit situation now, if you were anyone else, I'd have my men kill you all.
